The HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award honors hospitals operating in a paperless environment and representing best practices in implementing EHR

HIMSS Analytics awarded Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center, in Norfolk, Va., with a Stage 7 Award. The award represents Bon Secours DePaul’s attainment of the highest level on the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model™ (EMRAM).

HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a methodology for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database. There are eight stages (0-7) that measure a hospital’s implementation and utilization of information technology applications. The final stage, Stage 7, represents an advanced patient record environment. The validation process to confirm a hospital has reached Stage 7 includes a site visit by an executive from HIMSS Analytics and former or current chief information officers to ensure an unbiased evaluation of the Stage 7 environments.

“Bon Secours continues an excellent deployment of its EMR through the enterprise.  The cultural transformation continues to derive benefits of the quality and safety improvements.  The communities that are served by Bon Secours are lucky to have this advanced EMR supporting their patient care,” says John P. Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, executive vice president HIMSS Analytics.

During the second quarter of 2015, only 3.7 percent of the more than 5,400 U.S. hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics® Database received the Stage 7 Award. “Reaching Stage 7 is an affirmation of Bon Secours DePaul’s commitment to patient safety and providing exceptional care to our patients,” says Raymond McCue, MD, chief medical officer, Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center.

Not only have we implemented the most advanced levels of information technology available, we have demonstrated that the effective use of this technology improves the quality of care that is delivered.”
