Soya: A hidden gem

Written by Sammy Hutchison

For seven years, Soya Sushi Bar and Hibachi in Newport News has been operating under the ownership of Sammy Kim and his wife. In that time the restaurant has gained a very loyal following. Kim’s creativity and commitment to quality have resulted in an outstanding, unique menu for local sushi lovers. Soya’s family-like atmosphere—many diners are known on a first-name basis—makes a meal here feel more like dining at a friend’s house.

Options range from hibachi-style meals to teriyaki dishes; but when it comes to delicious and fresh fare, the conversation has to begin and end with sushi. I opted for a couple of classics—the Alaskan Roll and the Unagi Nigiri—along with one of “Sammy’s Specialty Rolls,” which appear on a separate menu. The Alaskan Roll pairs fresh salmon and avocado, a sushi combination as natural as peanut butter and jelly. The salmon was fresh, the avocado was creamy, and I was smiling through every bite. The Unagi (eel) was perfectly cooked and rested on a ball of rice. But the star of the show was undoubtedly the specialty roll. I decided on the “Come On Roll” from the extensive menu. It was filled with crab and topped with salmon and pickled onions, an incredible treat for the senses.

Soya is a small restaurant and therefore sometimes easy to miss; but once you make it there, I am positive you will find your way back.
