When is the right time to have joint replacement surgery?

When your joint pain is keeping you from enjoying the active lifestyle you want, it’s time to explore treatment options, both non-surgical and surgical. Oral medication, injections, physical therapy and activity modification are less invasive options. Surgery should be considered if these less invasive options do not provide adequate relief.

The goal of treatment is always to decrease pain and increase function. However, I encourage setting a personal goal. It can be
as simple as doing your own grocery shopping or engaging
in your favorite sports activity. This is your treatment, so understand your personal
goals, risks and benefits.

Patients frequently say, “Why did I wait so long!” I say it’s normal to be afraid of the unknown. When researching, look for a skilled surgeon,
a specialized care team and a dedicated unit with the ability to guide you through your complete care plan from start to finish.
