Hungry for the Facts

Written by Health Journal

September is Hunger Action Month

This is a month-long campaign in which Feeding America, and the national network of 200 food banks across the country mobilize the public to take action on the issue of domestic hunger. This campaign brings awareness about the reality of food insecurity and encourages individuals across the U.S. to get involved to help fight hunger.

  • 1 in 7 individuals across the United States struggles with food insecurity – the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food to live an active healthy life.
  • 1 in 5 children in the U.S worry about where their next meal is coming from.

Hunger doesn’t discriminate.  The faces of hunger are children, seniors, veterans, low-income hardworking individuals, the disabled, the unemployed and underemployed, and the homeless.

Hunger doesn’t take a vacation or a holiday, and exists in virtually every city and county in the United States.

It’s difficult to succeed when you are hungry, especially for children. On an empty stomach, kids do not have the energy to concentrate, engage with others, learn, grow and do the things they love to do…play and have fun!

Food insecurity and persistent hunger can have long term effects on a person’s health. When individuals do not have access to nutritious foods, they can develop serious health problems such as Type II Diabetes, Obesity, High Blood Pressure and Heart Disease.

Food banks rescue food through partnerships with local food manufacturers, grocery stores, and food distributors for food donations.

You can make a difference by donating funds and food, volunteering, and being a voice to help end hunger.

You can visit www.feedingamerica.org to find the food bank that supports your community and learn how you can make a positive impact by getting involved to help end hunger.
