Aging Task Force To Honor Caregivers

The Peninsula Task Force on Aging will host its fourth annual Hats Off to Caregivers event June 3 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Hampton Hotel and Conference Center. The event, featuring a catered breakfast, entertaining speakers, and a recognition ceremony as well as gifts and door prizes, will celebrate the efforts of certified nursing assistants, home health aides and companion caregivers. Cost for admission is $20 per person (each honoree can bring one guest for $15). The registration deadline is May 14.

Child Development Resources Nominated as Center of Excellence

May 2010

Former Gov. Timothy Kaine nominated the Child Development Resources Early Head Start program for consideration as a National Center of Excellence, an opportunity to spotlight high-quality programs that have established effective collaborative partnerships. Based in Williamsburg, CDR is one of four Virginia programs he nominated to compete for final selection as one of 10 National Centers of Excellence. One of CDRs effective partnerships is its 12-year collaboration with the Williamsburg-James City County public schools to provide Early Head Start (EHS) services for infants and toddlers from low-income, working families and to provide a learning laboratory for high school students interested in working with young children. If chosen, CDR will receive a $200,000 award for each of five years to share its innovative practices with other programs and enhance CDRs own services.

CSB Receives Grant For Infant/Toddler Development

The Colonial Services Board (CSB), a behavioral health agency serving the citizens of James City County, Poquoson, Williamsburg and York County, has received a grant for $232,242 from the Virginia Department of Social Services Division of Child Care and Early Childhood Development. The CSB is one of six grantees statewide that received an award, for a total distribution of $1.7 million for various projects through the Pilot Communities for Infant and Toddler Social, Emotional and Behavioral Development grant. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) provided the funding.

Shane Peng to Lead Quality Council

The American Medical Group Association (AMGA) has selected Dr. Shane H. Peng, vice president and senior medical director with Sentara Medical Group, to serve as chair-elect of its Quality Leadership Council. In his new role Peng will focus on promoting and monitoring quality initiatives within AMGA, which represents some of the nations largest and most prestigious medical practices as well as independent practice associations and integrated healthcare delivery organizations from across the country. AMGAs mission is to improve health care for patients by supporting multispecialty medical groups.

Anthem LemonAid To Be Held July 16-18

To support children who are fighting cancer at Childrens Hospital of The Kings Daughters, families, businesses and community groups throughout Hampton Roads can host lemonade stands during the second annual Anthem LemonAid, to be held July 16-18. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia has teamed up with the Childrens Miracle Network to sponsor this grassroots fundraising event. (CHKD is Hampton Roads local Childrens Miracle Network hospital.) Each participant receives a free supply kit, and 100 percent of the proceeds benefit CHKDs cancer program. Liver Institute Names Shiffman New Medical Director

Bon Secours Virginia welcomes Dr. Mitchell Shiffman to the Bon Secours Medical Group as the new medical director of the Liver Institute of Virginia, located at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News. Shiffman will be responsible for the implementation of evidence-based medical practices at the Institute and, ultimately, for ensuring that individuals with liver disease have access to high-quality, comprehensive care. He completed his residencies in internal medicine and hepatology at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and his fellowship training in gastroenterology at the Medical College of VirginiaVCU Medical Center.

HU Gets $8 Million for Biomedical Research Center

Hampton University was awarded an $8 million stimulus grant from the National Institutes of Health to build a biomedical research center. The facility will be the hub of research for HU’s schools of nursing, pharmacy and science on issues including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, adolescent health, AIDS and Alzheimer’s disease. The 20,000-square-foot center is slated to open next summer.
