E-book contains over 100 dietitian-approved recipes that fit into a heart-healthy diet.

Portsmouth, Va. (February 3, 2015) – Eating a heart-healthy diet is the key to reducing your risk for heart attack, stroke, heart disease and diabetes. By choosing the right foods at each meal, you can add years onto your life and even improve how you feel on a day-to-day basis.

In celebration of American Heart Month in February and to help the Hampton Roads community eat healthier, Bon Secours Heart & Vascular Institute has released a free heart-healthy cookbook titled “Good for Your Heart,” available for download here.

Good for Your Heart contains over 100 recipes for salads, soups, sides, breakfasts, main courses and desserts that were reviewed for healthiness by registered dietitians. The recipes were contributed by Bon Secours employees, the American Heart Association and other healthy resources. Each recipe includes ingredients, instructions and nutrition facts.

The book also provides tips from cardiologists on how to live a heart healthy life, instructions on how to substitute healthier ingredients into favorite recipes and guidance on what it means to eat heart healthy.

“We hope this recipe book will help members of our community get on the right course to optimal health,” says Edward Skillen, DO, cardiologist with Cardiovascular Specialists.

Because each recipe was reviewed by a registered dietitian, you can trust that when you cook these recipes, you are giving your body and your heart the right fuel to keep going strong.”

When it comes to heart disease, you can’t control factors such as age, gender and family history. However, you can reduce your risk by choosing a heart-healthy diet. Follow these guidelines to eat a heart-healthy diet:

  • Cut down on higher fat meats.
  • Eliminate simple carbohydrates like enriched white flour and sugars.
  • Eat healthier unsaturated fats.
  • Lower your sodium intake.
  • Rediscover fruits and vegetables.

“The combination of proper diet and exercise are the two most powerful medicines in the world!” says Dr. Skillen. “The good news is that everyone can afford them; it just takes some time and the correct information to apply them appropriately to your life.”
