Ben Smith is founder and co-owner of CrossFit Krypton in Chesapeake and is the current champion of the CrossFit Games, an intense workout competition that tests the greatest athletes across the globe. Contestants compete in an assortment of aerobic, weightlifting, gymnastic and other workouts. Ben took the title for the first time last summer after competing in seven championships.

How did you get involved with CrossFit?

I started CrossFit back in 2006 when I was a sophomore in high school. I was playing baseball and wanted to be a better player. My dad had a friend who was into CrossFit and he showed me the website CrossFit.com, and I just went with it. I learned all about it by watching the different videos on the website. I loved the challenge of it, how difficult the workouts were. I think that anything that challenges you and gets you out of your comfort zone will make you better.

What was your experience with the CrossFit Games like?

The CrossFit Games is a test of the fittest on Earth. You have to perform work in as many different tasks as possible. I like it because it is about being the super athlete, not someone who can do just one thing, but someone who can do anything. I’ve competed in the CrossFit Games seven times. Training for it is a full-time job, nonstop, year-round. When I won, it felt great to finally reach my goal, but it really is just a title. For me, it was more about enjoying the journey, the process and the training. I love CrossFit training, training with friends, and getting better each day.

Why did you decide to open CrossFit Krypton?

I’ve owned the gym for about three years now. I fell in love with CrossFit, and I also like to coach and help others achieve their goals, so opening a gym was a great way to combine those things that I am passionate about, and to create a community that is helping others to get better each day. I enjoy it.

What exactly is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a combination of various components of fitness. It could be running, weightlifting, biking, gymnastics, rowing, anything that you want, but it is a high intensity workout.

What advice do you have for beginners?

When people start CrossFit, they may have a particular goal in mind. Some may want to lose weight, some may want to build muscle mass. It is tailored to whatever an individual’s goals may be. It is without a doubt the best fitness program out there. My advice would be to find a coach, someone who will be able to teach you how to do everything correctly, to support you and to help you get better. The gym is great because of the community aspect. There is always someone there to help you. You should give it a try. You will be surprised. It will change your life.
