A Place for Beer and Cheer

Written by Page Freer

DOG Street Pub offers fantastic food and drink in a relaxed atmosphere.

“Casual cuisine with an English accent.”

That’s how the menu describes Williamsburg’s newest gathering place, the DoG Street Pub, located in Merchants Square. “DoG Street” is short for Duke of Gloucester Street, the main road stretching through the downtown historic area.

The pub, which opened in June, is housed in an 80-year-old bank building and features many original details such as wrought iron and a black-and-white checkered marble floor. The pub is owned by David Everett, owner and executive chef of Blue Talon Bistro and The Trellis restaurant.

Beer rules at the DoG Street Pub. The menu features two pages of bottled selections, from local brews to hard-to-find imported labels. About 17 draft beer selections are available on a menu that continually changes. Draft beers come in imperial pints (20 oz.), half-pints (10 oz.) or “tastes” (5 oz.). Thirty-two-ounce “growlers” of draft beer can be purchased and carried out in a sealed glass bottle.

Food-wise, available during lunch are sandwiches ($9-14), burgers ($10-12), fresh salads ($5-12), small plates ($5-9) and “plates to share” ($7–12).

A healthy pick is the Salmon Salad—fresh greens topped with a hand-pattied salmon cake, cucumber, tomato, red onion and dressing. There’s also a Salmon Burger that comes on a toasted white bun and topped with lettuce, tomato and onion. Pub Tartar Sauce is served on the side with a basket of thick-cut fries. The Fried Eggplant Sandwich, lightly fried eggplant slices served on hearty nut bread, topped with hummus spread and spinach, was delicious. Disappointing was the Curried Chicken Salad Sandwich, which lacked a certain punch.

Desserts ($3-4.50) include standouts like the Eton Mess (berry puree with whipped cream and crunchy meringue) and the classic Spotted Dick—a warm, fluffy vanilla cake baked with golden raisins and smothered in custard.

The Pub also offers a kids’ menu ($4-7.50), but the portions aren’t skimpy. The Kids Hot Dog is a monster on a bun.

The dinner menu replaces sandwiches with large plates ($14-27) that include favorites like Bangers and Mash, Fish and Chips and the more exotic Chicken Tikka Masala. But no matter what you choose, The DoG Street Pub will inspire you to sit—and stay.
