The Health Journal asked a few local celebrities about their healthy resolutions for the New Year. Here’s what they had to say:

Compiled By Brandy Centolanza

1 — Cheryl Tan, news anchor for WAVY

“Now that my kids are older, they are developing an interest in growing food. Together, we’re going to meet our goal of eating more ‘real’ food. I’d also like to mix things up [when I exercise.]… I’m going to try to include more strength training and different types of exercises to stay fit. Finally, I’d also like to slow down … I hope to be able to step back a little and include some free time in the schedule so my kids can get out and be kids.”

2 — James Anderson, Hampton Roads native and player for the Carolina Panthers

“I usually don’t make New Year’s Resolutions, as I try to set goals and work toward those goals throughout the entire year. Those goals tend to include bettering myself on and off the field, and striving to help the community around me, always wanting to look at the bigger picture. I do have an intense passion for the arts. Recently, I purchased a piano. So, if I were to make a New Year’s resolution, it would have to be mastering the piano. I want to learn and practice enough this coming year so that I can eventually be confident to play in public.”

3 — Kurt Williams, news anchor, WTKR

“I’d like to be more dedicated with exercising, and do weights three times a week and cardio three times a week.  I already eat a lot of fruits, but I plan to make a more concerted effort to eat veggies, in particular the green leafy types rich in potassium.”

4 — Patrick Rockey, Meteorologist, WTKR

“I spent most of 2012 battling tendonitis, so I was limited to mostly cardio workouts. In 2013, I plan to hit the weights again and increase my muscle mass. I also want to increase my intake of fresh fruits and vegetables.”

5 — Carl Lum, park president,Busch Gardens Williamsburg

“My goal for 2013 is to train and finish a sprint triathlon and to also swim the James River with the College of William & Mary Swim Team’s event to raise money to fight cancer. As a cancer survivor, I’m very proud of what these young folks do to help the fight against cancer.”

6 — Clyde Haulman, Mayor of Williamsburg

“My New Year’s resolutions are to work out at least three times a week for 45-60 minutes; walk at least one hour per day; take the stairs whenever possible; keep my weight between 175-180 pounds; drink a glass of wine every day; eat sensibly; and read, write, travel, gather with friends frequently and enjoy life.”

7 — Theron Davis, Former NFL player (For the Minnesota Vikings)

“My resolution is to eat healthier. I developed some pretty bad eating habits as a professional athlete. Now that I’m turning 41 and I’m coaching instead of playing, I’ve got to start looking at things like my cholesterol and blood pressure. I’m going to try to stay away from a lot of fried and fast foods.”

8 — Rosemary Willis, Miss Virginia

“My New Year’s resolution is to train for a half marathon. I ran my first one in high school before [an] injury, but I haven’t been able to work my endurance back up since then. I’d love to prove to myself that I’m stronger than before and can persevere through it again.”

9 — Chris Reckling, co-host, The Hampton Roads Show

“I will try to be a better husband to my wife, Cathy. For most husbands that is a work in progress. Cathy does so much for the family that I would like to each day try to make her life a little easier. Along those same lines, I would like to be a better father to my boys. Both in their early teens, they need a strong, supportive and understanding father figure.”

10 — Ariane Aramburo, co-host, The Hampton Roads Show

“My New Year’s Resolution started in September. I made a lifestyle choice to be healthy and stick with it. I’ve kept my gym routine up and gave up one of the hardest things: soda. In order to be successful, you have to make a conscious effort to change your life and be serious about it. I have done that and the results are speaking for themselves. I feel good, have more energy and will continue into 2013. I believe when you’re healthy and happy everything else in your life will fall into place.”
